Edward Coyle was one of the first Americans to serve in the ambulance service in World War I. From a lengthy account of the Siege of Verdun, to such chapters as, “The American YMCA,” “Rear-Line Diversions, and ”Spies," Coyle gives us rare insights into the human side of this intense war. He writes in an eloquent and engaging style that gives a sense of presence and empathy. (Summary by Larry Wilson)
