In this, the 14th volume of his Rougon-Macquart cycle, Emile Zola depicts the life struggles of an artist, Claude Lantier--the elder brother of Etienne Lantier ("Germinal"). The book describes his genius, his struggles both to complete his works, and his failure at gaining acceptance, and his tragic end. Because he felt Lantier was in some measure based on him, the artist Paul Cezanna, a lifelong friend of Zola, broke off their friendship permanently. - Summary by Mark Leder
